Dark Knight Returns is one of the 80's comics that helped transform not only the genre of superheroes, but the medium of comics in general. Since Frank Miller's text is so dense, we will watch the animated film in sections before each homework reading and class discussion. While watching the movie, you are expected to fill in your study guide questions relating to plot. In class we will analyze the depiction of the comic elements and how they contribute to the themes. And, due to the depth of this graphic novel, students have relied on multiple literary theories - New Historicism, Feminist Studies, Gender Studies, etc. - to help gain a deeper understanding of the text.
